Well, the signs are all here -- grapes, Fall squashes and melons, and there is
a chill in the air, so this may be the last weekend for a generous offering of
summer vegetables. Many farmers have gorgeous sauce tomatoes, including Mountain

them, you don't have much longer to enjoy them. The farmers say that they've
had pumpkins for a month, although they haven't brought them in yet, and several
farms are bringing in grapes and mums. Just saying ...
Wednesday, September 17, 2008
Missed the early morning market due to a vet visit, but I did walk through

salad -- delicious! I'm taking advantage of the season to enjoy eggplants, corn,
heirloom tomatoes, peppers, lima and other beans, squashes, and all sorts of greens.
There's so much good produce around that it's possible to slip into taking it for
granted, but the first grapes that appeared in the market this weekend reminded me
that time is passing and that the slide away from peak season is coming fast. September
will be arriving next week! It's really time to start preparing heirloom and other
tomatoes for the freezer, not to mention basil and other herbs in olive oil.
Saturday, August 23, 2008

I've decided to stay in this rainy morning, but if you are going to the
Greenmarket, I'd recommend checking out Yuno, who had great asparagus on
Friday, and Newfield Farm for beautiful tulips.

I was in the Greenmarket a bit too early this morning and didn't see some

possible for today but I didn't see them, either.
Friday, April 18, 2008
Yuno has a beautiful array of salad and other greens today as well as
broccoli rabe. Newfield Farm has gorgeous tulips and Our Daily Bread is

that they will only have enough eggs for the Abingdon Square market, but
the rest of their great produce will be here on Fridays and Mondays.

pastured chicken, and eggs. I haven't tried their food yet, but it looks interesting.
There's also a new dairy, Milk Thistle organic dairy farm.
Cheerful Cherry is here! They'll be here on Fridays and Saturdays with their
good looking plants, tasty jams, and flowers. I can't wait for their luscious
cherries to arrive!
New York Magazine's article about Deep Mountain's maple syrup was fine, except
that the Grade B that they were rhapsodizing about isn't available yet. It's
certainly worth the cudos, so keep checking.
Wednesday, April 9, 2008
The setup of the Greenmarket is a bit strange today, with half of the stands
on the South end of the park and the rest on the West side, with odd spaces
(soon to be filled by returning farmers) and other sorts of venders in between.
Nonetheless, the farmers are here and their delicious produce is starting to
show stirrings of things to come. (By the way, Cheerful Cherry and Cherry Lane
should be back on Saturday, and I understand that they will be in or near their
usual spots.)

I have to confess to a rigorous week of Restaurant Week indulgences,
all at lunch, so my cooking adventures were minimal. However, I did
eat (no surprise to anyone who knows me) delicious baked potatoes from
Paffenroth, alternating nights with poultry stock made from Quattro's
wonderful chicken parts, Paffenroth's leeks, onions, carrots, and turnips,
and the last of Miglorelli's celery.
I made wonderful venison chili from stew meat I bought from Quattro's last
week, and have some stored in the freezer for winter-chilled days like today.

I got to the market a bit late, having taken Mr. Fitz to the vet for his
yearly checkup, but I'm glad I got there! Several farmers said that
Saturday, December 22, will be their last day in the Greenmarket until next

Yuno says that if it stays this cold, today is their last day! They are here with
beautiful salad greens and herbs, root vegetables, and TOMATOES! Stokes has cut
herbs, herb wreaths, and other produce.
The fresh cranberry farmer is here today, near Yuno's stand, and is hoping the
market can find them a space for their unique item tomorrow. Just in case,
it's probably a good idea to get there today. The market is packed on Saturdays,
especially with the Christmas market taking up so much of its room.
River Garden is here with dried flower arrangements and Beth's Jam has prettily
wrapped jams and chutneys. I've done alot of my Christmas shopping right at
those two stands!
Saturday, December 1, 2007
Cherry Lane is back!!!They have lovely sweet cherry tomatoes, broccoli rabe,
spinach, and cauliflower. Next week will be their real last week for the season.
Stokes is here with herb wreaths, squash, and some cut herbs. Mountain Sweet
Berry has potatoes, crones, and beautiful Christmas wreaths. Paffenroth and

have good looking apples. Windfall has beautiful greenhouse greens and various
turnips.
OUR FARMERS NEED HELP RIGHT AWAY! The USDA is seeking comments, DUE DECEMBER 3,
on proposed national leafy greens handling regulations that would create expenses
many of our local farmers could not afford. Gorzinsky has the full information at
his stand. This seems to be an un-thoughtout solution to the panic caused by the
ecoli problem that could better be solved in other ways. The information sheet has
info on how to email your reactions to the gov't this weekend.Go to www.regulations.gov
In the middle of the screen, you will see "Search Documents."
In Step 1, choose "Documents with an open comments period"
In Step 2, choose "Department of Agriculture"
In Step 3, choose "PROPOSED RULES"
In Step 4, choose "Docket ID and then type in AMS-FV-07-0090
Hit "Submit"
Next, you will see a column titled "Comments, add/due by."
Click on the tiny tan dialogue icon, and you are now ready to submit your
information and your comments.
I JUST CHECKED THE ABOVE WEBSITE AND IT IS DOWN FOR MAINTENANCE UNTIL 8pm!!!
What a coincidence!

is offering exceptional lilies and potted flowering plants.
Mountain Sweet Berry has decorative wreaths and garland for the holidays and
other farmers have brought in Christmas trees and flowers. Stokes Farm has
edible herb wreaths as well.
Keith's rocambole garlic makes a great gift. They will be here until December 22,
with colorful net bags of garlic and shallots.
Saturday, November 24, 2007
I got to the market a bit early today, so some of the farmers there hadn't
set up yet, but most of the Saturday stands are here. Violet Hill has
poultry, sausage, and other goodies and Stokes is here with generous bunches
of cut herbs and herb wreaths. Paffenroth has beautiful produce and S&SO
has great produce at good prices. Breezy Hill, Locust Grove, and other
orchards are here with fruit and cider and Ted Blew has excellent cider,

Check to see if they still have those lovely tiny potatoes (I used some
on Thanksgiving and they were delicious).
Gorzinsky has organic greens and root vegetables and Hoeffner has cauliflower
and cabbages. James Durr has cauliflower and broccoli in addition to their
flowers and River Garden has beautiful dried flower arrangements and is in
their winter location on 17th Street today. Ronnybrook has drinkable yogurt,

Ronnybrook -- garlic butter;
Keith -- shallots;
D'Attolico -- tiny turnips;

and others have brought in a variety of produce, including many colors of cauliflower,
carrots, beets, and other root and green vegetables. Stokes has their marvelous

8 A.M., so they may be coming later. Our Daily Bread is here with great baguettes
and other delicious loaves and rolls and Bread Alone has a huge stand with breads
and dessert pastries. Breezy Hill has alot of pastries in addition to their fruit
and cider.
I picked up my capon at Quattro's stand and saw that they have several turkeys and
other poultry besides ordered birds, so if you're doing a last minute shopping,
you should be able to find something at their stand. DiPaola is here with turkeys
and Violet Hill should be here as well.
Your favorite stands may not be in their usual spots, so check the CENYC website listed
in yesterday's report for a map of today's market. Flora Perfecta is here with
lovely lilies and the rose people have great choices as well. River Garden has
wonderful dried flower arrangements for gifts.
Tuesday, November 20, 2007
Check out the CENYC website for a map of the locations of your favorite farm and
other stands in the Greenmarket tomorrow:
http://www.cenyc.org/files/gmkt/112107layout.pdf
The website also features cauliflower, which will be available at many stands.
There is a new variety this year, orange in color, that turns out to be tasty
and sweet. Several stands have brussels sprouts and Mountain Sweet Berry, Paffenroth,
and Berried Treasures have a wide variety of potatoes. D'Attolico, S&SO, Stokes
Farm, Windfall Farm, Hoeffner, and others have salad greens, herbs, and other
produce. Oak Grove Plantation (Ted Blew) and Breezy Hill have pies and cider.
There is a new entry in the market with organic cranberries
(Ed DeNike of DeNike Bog from Plymouth, Massachusetts) and several orchards
will be here with apples and other fruit. Beth's Jams will be here with cranberry
chutneys, cranberry sauce, and cranberry jams.
Monday, November 19, 2007
Just a reminder that Norwich Farm (squashes, frozen fava beans and tomatoes,
various other produce) and Eckerton (luscious hot peppers, pepper bunches for
decorations and gifts) are expecting to be in the Greenmarket today. Other
farmers usually here on Saturday may be here as well, since the Christmas
Market has crowded them out, so it's worth an exploratory visit. Yuno is
definitely going to be here. If I get the laundry done early enough, I'll
check it out myself! There's a new farmer in the market, by the way, bringing
in organic cranberries. He'll be here on Wednesday as well!
Saturday, November 17, 2007
City Harvest is in the market today collecting food and suggests that you buy
an extra bag of produce and donate it to City Harvest. They're offering a free
guidebook for anyone who donates a bag of produce.
Today is Sycamore's last day until next summer, and they've brought in field
tomatoes, broccoli, and pumpkins. Just about everyone else who is here today
will be here Wednesday, including Jim Grillo of Northshire, who may have his
excellent CARDOONS. He has beautiful cardoons and Savoy cabbages today. Violet
Hill has good looking bacon and other meats, but no eggs! Stokes Farm has
beautiful herb wreaths and mixed herb bunches for flavoring your Thanksgiving
bird. He also has persian cucumbers and other produce.
S&SO, Paffenroth, and Cherry Lane will have their delicious vegetables on Wednesday
as well as today. Buzzard Krest is here and will be here Wednesday with their grapes and grape
juices. Quattro's and Violet Hill are here today and will be here on Wednesday.
Talk to them if you haven't ordered for Thursday yet. I saw an amazing array of
poultry at Quattro's stand today.
Locust Grove and other orchards will be here on Wednesday with apples, cider, and
baked goods. Ted Blew is here with mixed berry and other pies and will have them
on Wednesday as well. Beth's Jam has all sorts of cranberry preserves and sauce.
Mountain Sweet Berry has their unique European style mini and mid sized potatoes
and Cherry Lane has beautiful sweet potatoes.
If you're planning to shop on Wednesday, remember that the Christmas Market is
up and your favorite farmers may be in different spots than their usual.
Wednesday, November 14, 2007
Today is Evolution's last day until next year. They have beautiful root
vegetables, greens, and squashes today. Eckerton is here today with gorgeous
lettuces, outstanding hot peppers in all stages of heat, bunches of hanging
pepper branches, and HEIRLOOM TOMATOES! They will be here on Monday, but
not on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Sycamore's last day will be
Saturday -- they have broccoli, squashes, and field tomatoes today. Stokes
will be here next Wednesday and has a variety of herbs, some heirloom tomatoes,
and herb wreaths for gifts. Mountain Sweet Berry will be here next week with
a variety of small and large potatoes and possibly baby leeks. Berried Treasures
has shallots and potatoes and will be here next week as well.
You can still order a Thanksgiving turkey from DiPaola in the Greenmarket today.
Three Corner Field Farm is here today with lamb, yogurt, and cheese and will
be here next Wednesday as well. Cato will not be here next Wednesday, so the last
time you can pick up their excellent cheeses before the holiday is Saturday.
Saturday, November 10, 2007
Jim Grillo of Northshire Farm has beautiful orchid radicchio and CARDOONS!
Eckerton has a wide range of hot peppers and branches of red and Thai peppers.
Cherry Lane has their knockout sweet potatoes and broccoli rabe. Stokes has
lemongrass, heirloom tomatoes, big bunches of herbs, and herb wreathes.
Order your Thanksgiving bird from Violet Hill or Quattro's today. I've had
delicious capons for the holiday from Quattro's, by the way. Both farms bring
in great poultry.
Beth's Jams has a variety of cranberry items and Ted Blew has some luscious
looking pies, including lemon-blueberry, apple crumb, mixed berry, and strawberry.
This is the last Saturday for Norwich Farm and may be the last for Sycamore, although
they'll be here on Wednesday. Norwich will be here on Mondays with squashes and
other vegetables, frozen favas and tomatoes, and pickles.
Many farmers will be here on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving who are normally
just here on Saturdays, including Quattro's and Violet Hill.
Friday, November 9, 2007
Ted Blew has delicious looking fruit pies today as well as his excellent

Garden has dried flower arrangements for gifts.
Saturday, November 3, 2007
Ted Blew and Stokes have beautiful heirloom tomatoes today. Other farmers have
good looking field tomatoes. Eckerton is not here, but Cherry Lane and Sycamore
are. Stokes will be making mixed bunches of fresh herbs for roasts, drying, etc.,
later today. They have started bringing in herbal wreaths as well.
Hoeffner has squashes and brussels sprouts and Cherry Lane has big bags of spinach
as well as cherry peppers and their excellent fresh-dug sweet potatoes and yukon
golds. Mountain Sweet Berry has "golden nugget" potatoes -- great for under your
turkey or other roast. They also have crosnes again!
Norwich Farm has frozen fava beans, frozen tomatoes, heirloom tomatoes, peppers
and eggplants and has brought in their own pickled cucumbers. Buzzard Krest is
here with grapes and grape juices. Keith has wonderful big heads of rocambole
garlic, beautiful turnips, and has a half price sale on small shallots. He is
also giving a rebate to those who use reusable cloth bags!
Alot of the farmers will only be here until Christmas and some will have gone
after Thanksgiving, so get there while you can!
Friday, November 2, 2007
The recessional continues with the absence of Cheerful Cherry and Sycamore.
There are some good tomatoes available today, but you need to choose carefully.
There are plenty of varieties of cauliflower, peppers, and other produce, but
the cold weather has definitely had an effect. Several farmers have good-looking
potatoes, apples, and pears. Blew still has his great apple cider and many farmers
have pumpkins and other squash. Stokes has big generous bunches of herbs -- if you
dry herbs for the winter, you can still find a good variety, but seize the day.
I'm very happy with the fresh coriander seeds on stems that are perfuming my
kitchen as we speak.
Wednesday, October 31, 2007
Keith has fresh BLACK WALNUTS! I didn't think anything new would be showing
up now that there's been a frost, but these are definitely interesting. They
need a certain amount of work, but anything worth doing probably needs work.
Stokes has another rarity, fresh coriander seeds on the stalk -- pungent and
tasty.Try Mountain Sweet Berry's wonderful European potatoes under your roast
Turkey -- especially La Ratte, Gold Nuggets, or Ruby Crescents.
Stokes, Sycamore, Cherry Lane, Eckerton, and Keith all have tomatoes, but this
is late in the season and there aren't many. The frost has affected several
farmers. Cherry Lane has beautiful broccoli rabe, okra, field tomatoes, brussels
sprouts, and fairytale eggplant. Paffenroth and Miglorelli have plenty of
produce and Evolution has good-looking greens. S&SO, Blew, Sycamore, and others have
excellent pumpkins and there's plenty of broccoli around the market.
Flora Perfecta has beautiful lilies and autumn-colored bouquets of fall flowers.
Phillips has pretty tasty raspberries and there are plenty of apples and pears
to be had. Sign up in the DiPaola book to order your Thanksgiving turkey today.
Saturday, October 27, 2007
Just when you thought there'd be nothing else new this late in the season,
Mountain Sweet Berry has brought in CROSNES, a tiny jerusalem artichoke-like
crunchy tuber which does well roasted, slightly sauted in butter, or parboiled
and sauced. If you are eating out tonight, you may have some along with
raviolis under lobster! It's a versatile French vegetable.
This may be the last weekend for most farmers to bring in heirloom tomatoes.
There's a frost threatened for tonight that may finish off the astoundingly
late season. You can find them today at Eckerton, Sycamore,Blew, and Stokes. D'Attolico
and other farmers still have a variety of tasty eggplants and Stokes has their
excellent Persian cucumbers. Paffenroth has a wide array of produce, including
burdock, salsify, baby fennel, and all sorts of carrots, radishes, onions, potatoes,
and other root vegetables. Northshire has gorgeous Italian produce and delicious
chicken and quail eggs.
This is Cheerful Cherry's last week in the market until next Spring, so stop
by to pick up their grapes and apples. Locust Grove, Breezy Hill, Terhune, and
others have excellent apples and Red Jacket is here with fruit flavored ciders.
Ted Blew has gooseneck squash as well as other squashes, peppers, and delicious
cider.
Saturday, October 20, 2007
You wouldn't believe it was the middle of October to see beautiful heirloom
tomatoes at the stands of Eckerton, Stokes, Blew, Sycamore, Norwich and others.
Norwich and Cherry Lane also have lovely little "fairytale" eggplants and Cherry
Lane has okra. Sycamore still has excellent CORN and Paffenroth has their immense
selection of interesting produce. S&SO has a great variety of produce as well and
Northshire has good looking greens. Norwich has frozen fava beans and fresh
strawberries today and Mountain Sweet Berry has cranberry beans and flageolets!
Eckerton also has a wide array of delicious hot and sweet peppers and had
raspberries this morning!
Once in a while a new vegetable shows up in the greenmarket. This season has
introduced orange cauliflower! It's sweet and tasty and definitely worth trying.
I also like the now familiar purple variety a few farmers are bringing in.
Gorzynski, D'Attolico, and Keith have gorgeous lettuces and other greens.
Cheerful Cherry has apples and several kinds of grapes and Buzzard Krest is here
with various grapes and grape juices. Several farms have apple cider, including
Blew, who has some of the best and freshest. Terhune, Breezy Hill, Locust Grove,
and others have great new apples and cider.
Friday, October 19, 2007
Many farmers still have eggplants, tomatoes, and peppers today. Yuno, Blew,
Stokes, and Sycamore have heirloom tomatoes. Miglorelli has good looking
produce and Samascott is here with terrific apples and other fruit. Several
farmers have great cider, including Blew and Samascott. Stokes has generous
cut herb bunches, including lemon verbena, peppermint, basil, parsley, sage,
rosemary and lemon thyme, and lemon grass. Blew, Sycamore, and others have
pumpkins for soup and for decorating.
This crazy weather has stretched the summer vegetable season so that we have
Yuno with three kinds of cauliflower and out of season heirlooms at the same
time. Given that the weather is unpredictable, we shouldn't be surprised to
find the Shushan hydroponic tomato farm back -- they are scheduled to take
over when the field tomato season is gone, but so it goes. We'll be glad to
have them when this weirdness finally ends.
Wednesday, October 17, 2007
We still have heirloom tomatoes! They're not peak quality, but they're still
tasty and several farmers have good-looking choices, including Blew, Stokes,
Cherry Lane, Berried Treasures, Keith, Sycamore and Eckerton. Paffenroth has their
wide variety of produce, including baby fennel, puntarella, cresses, two kinds
of cilantro, big bunches of various herbs, and all kinds of delicious potatoes.
Stokes still has lemongrass, bunches of cut herbs, and other produce. Berried
Treasures has golden and red raspberries and many kinds of cherry tomatoes.
Cherry Lane has big bags of spinach, okra, and brussels sprouts. Sycamore still
has corn and kirbys. Locust Grove, Breezy Hill, and Terhune are here with
many kinds of apple.
Saturday, October 13, 2007
Some farmers came close to a frost last night, but the market is still
going strong today. There are several farmers with cauliflowers, pumpkins,
and various gourds and squashes, but there are some with good looking late
season heirloom tomatoes as well, including Blew, Norwich Meadows, Stokes,
Sycamore, and Mountain Sweet Berry (heirloom sauce tomatoes). I roasted Northshire and
Mountain Sweet Berry's San Manzano tomatoes last week and they were so good
I'm going to do i
