America the Beautiful

This quilt was ripped off from — er, inspired by one my mother made that interprets the lyrics of "America the Beautiful." It includes elements from M'Liss Rae Hawley's excellent book, Mariner's Medallion. It's being given as a gift to my dad to donate to the charity auction of his choice.

Detail of the center medallion, a mariner's compass with a lighthouse print in the center.
This is a detail of the quilting in the center medallion. The white fabric is a white-on-white print, and the white thread I used to quilt it doesn't show up well in the photo. Picture enhanced by Computer MagicTM.
Detail of the house block on the lower right side. I appliqued the children in the windows and quilted straight lines along the house to mimic the look of clapboard siding. There's a tiny gold doorknob, too.
Detail of lighthouse in lower left corner. I used this sheer shimmery organdy ribbon to cast light onto the waves. I also used a neat tiny fish print in some of the ocean strips.
These are the purple mountains (majestic, natch) on the right side of the landscape border. The sun has lines quilted through it in copper metallic thread, and the strips of sky have shimmery sheer ribbon overlaid to suggest colorful mists at sunrise.
This is a look at the bottom border, with the picket fence and the amber waves of grain/fruited plain. The grain is a bargello simple strip featuring fourteen different fabrics.
Here's the label on the back.
