MY OWN

photo Felicia Rosshandler

I gave the plastic goddess to Stephen and he placed her on his shoulders and closed his eyes. I first encountered her at a sidewalk toy sale, naked and discarded by a pre-pubescent Alice. I could not help touching her flesh as it caught and reflected the morning sun. Loved, hated, cherished and vituperated; the American Venus turns out to be a Readymaid for you.

I have placed her in nature, with strangers, with food, with animals, on the road. I have photographed her making love, giving birth, bleeding, dying, shorn of hair, mutilated, dead and born again. She plays in the snow, swims in a river, crawls up a leg, murmurs in your ear, prances on your body, stands by the hunted deer.

What would you have her do?
