Cerebralism - The Art of Karen Rose

“To be a surrealist means barring from your mind all remembrance of what you have seen, and being always on the lookout for what has never been.”  -René Magritte

Though clearly influenced by the surrealist masters, I prefer to call my style of painting Cerebralism.  In an age where the only uncharted frontiers lie within our minds, I attempt to reach the viewer on a cerebral level by creating a space where one's spiritual self is free to roam and explore. I enjoy challenging the viewer’s perception by manipulating the rules of perspective and shadow, reminding the viewer that life is many-layered and it is important to enjoy the beauty in and around us.

I am enthralled with the splendor of the skies here in South Florida.   Born and raised in New York City where one has to struggle to glimpse just a few inches of sky, I am fascinated by the inherent possibilities of color, texture and patterns therein.  The enormity of it all, the sky and then the sea - a massive and moving conduit of change.

Although widely known for my acrylic paintings, I have recently begun experimenting with new media and have amassed a body of work in this field.  The new works incorporate photography, digital imaging and acrylic painting.

Whether pushing paint or pushing pixels, I attempt to bring serenity into the hectic lives of others, to draw the weary viewer in for a relaxing interlude and the opportunity to let the mind take you where you think you want to be.
