About 2 weeks ago, all the 6th graders in our school went to Outdoor School. Our class went to the Sandy River site, Camp Angelos. We left Sunday, June 5th and came back Friday, June 10th.
We were there for about five days. It was okay, but the days were long and boring. We spent about 4 hours a day doing field study, where we learned about Water, Animals, Soil, or Plants (we switched every day). We also had time with our class and recreation time, where we did stuff like go on hikes, play field games, and do other stuff like that. We spent an hour and a half every day with our cabins, where we had a fort building contest and played field games.
We were up for 14-16 hours a day, depending on how long it took you to go to sleep. We got up at 7 o'clock every morning, unless you had to take a shower, and went to bed at 9 o'clock, although I stayed up to 11 every night because 9 is way too early to go to sleep. I was on the bottom bunk, and the person on the top snored and rolled around, shaking the bunk. Someone in our cabin described him as a young Tony Soprano, because he was kinda big and looked like an Italian.
Overall it was okay, and it was a lot better than going to school. And here are the names of some of the counselors...
Splinter-my cabin leader
Cambria
Banana Slug
Bullfrog-Water field instructor, worked at an after school program I went to
Kumo- Producer for the TV show, The Real World, my friend convinced him to consider a kids Real World
Kintla
Blaze- the best counselor there, everyone in his cabin was a "Blaze Boy", and got t-shirts with that on the front and a jersey number on the back
Vega-Soil field instructor
Grizzly-Plants field instructor, great Napolean Dynamite and Shrek impersonations
Stretch-Animals field instructor, tall
Snake-Camp Leader
Trapper John
Squeeker
Wild
Ladybug- Nurse, helped when I lost one of the lenses on my glasses
Eagle- our teacher
Sunshine- a teacher from another school, found my lense
Oh, M, I agree. 9:00 *is* way to early to go to sleep. Geesh, how could you get any sleep worrying about your bunk mate, "Tony", crashing down on top of you?
The fort building contest sounds really cool! Tell us more about that.
Posted by: lu at June 20, 2005 04:44 PMSorry about the snoring, thrashing bunk mate. But the rest sounds like fun. Way more fun than school or work. Nice report- thanks.
Posted by: vicki at June 20, 2005 08:26 PMThanks, M. "long and boring" doesn't sound right, what with all the activities in which you were involved. But, you were there, and I wasn't, so Mogul knows best.
Banana Slug is my favorite reptile, or worm, or arachnid, or tonsil, or whatever the heck it is.
Posted by: Old Horsetail Snake at June 21, 2005 10:18 AMThe fort building contest was where we made forts with the bunks in our cabins. We made a box. We put two bunks close to each other and put one on top, so it was like a bridge. then we put one on the back and used mattresses to soften the inside up. We kicked butt. And Banana Slugs are mollusks, not reptiles or worms.
Posted by: Da Mogul at June 21, 2005 06:08 PMDon't even be getting ideas about fort building in your room, son of mine...
And what were you saying about the people who were licking the bottom of a banana slug - what was that about again?
Posted by: Betsy at June 21, 2005 11:28 PMSo, this was a long time ago. What mischief have you been up to lately?
Posted by: Old Horsetail Snake at June 27, 2005 11:47 AMSo, what have you written for me lately? Hmmm?
All play and no blog makes Mogul a dull boy. Or something.
