Dr. William Dewees (1768-1841), the first American medical man to write a pediatric guide, advised expectant mothers in the seventh month to start letting puppies suckle at their breasts to toughen the nipples and prepare for the onslaught of junior. (Yes, the odd painting above is apparently Hispanic.)
