    An Alex Reynolds Mystery

    By Fred Hunter

Alex Reynolds is not what one could reasonably call a "dog person" -- although his mother, Jean, and his lover, Peter Livesay, most assuredly are. So when their friends Mason and Ryan need someone to care for their beloved West Highland Terrier, the only one who isn't thrilled is Alex himself. But the long week is over, Mason and Ryan have returned from their trip to Washington, D.C., and to Alex's relief, it is time to return Muffin (!) to it's owners.

But Alex's relief is short-lived. Ryan comes home one day to find Mason brutally murdered, Mason's doll collection destroyed, and the house thoroughly searched. Shortly thereafter, Ryan is also murdered. Now, in addition to the rest of the consequences of their untimely deaths, Alex has the one thing he never wanted -- custody of Muffin. Give the state of the house and the brutality of the murders, Alex is sure that someone out there thought that the couple had something specific -- something that the murderer or murderers wanted badly enough to kill for twice.

Alex, unfortunately, could not be more right. The killers now mistakenly believe that, in addition to inheriting their friends' annoying dog, Alex and his family have the missing item. And the killers are more than willing to kill again if isn't returned very soon.

Fred Hunter is the author of two previous Alex Reynolds mysteries -- Government Gay and Federal Fag -- as well as six other mysteries. He lives in Chicago.
