Molly's link to her friend Marjorie's article and my sister's discussion of a recent New York Times article called "Where Have All the Lisas Gone?" (to which I can't link because the bastards at the Times will make you pay to see it), have me thinking about trends in baby names.
Poor Emily, she's going to be the Lisa/Karen/Susan of her generation. Jonah, I think, has it a little better.
Meanwhile, I am reminded of a joke, courtesy of my mother-in-law's friend Ellin (no, that's not a typo):
It's the year 2040, and a mother calls her son on the playground..."Shmulie!" she hollers. What comes around goes around, I guess. Posted by volfie at August 5, 2003 09:28 PM"Shmulie?" her friend asks.
"He's named after his Grandpa Scott."
I sighed when I read this line near the end of the piece:
'Had we accidentally picked the next Zoe?'
When I picked the name out 15+ years ago, it was in honor of my great-grandmother and no one had ever heard of it. Ten years later, we started hearing of other folks using it shortly after our Zoe was born. She's already been Zoe R. in preschool - and thinks that you spell her name 'z..o..e..space..r..dot'.
I blame that damned orange muppet...
Posted by: betsy on August 6, 2003 03:31 PMWhen we picked Emily, in 1997, we didn't think it was avant-garde, but we did think it was off the beaten track! Then we started those Mommy & Me classes, and you know the rest of the story...
Posted by: terry on August 6, 2003 04:33 PMI am reminded of a terrific book by John Barnes, set in the next 50 years or so, called "Mother of Storms" and a small scene in which elderly residents of a Carribbean retirement home are menaced by a hurricane. "Hurry *up* Brittny," says one resident to another as they head to shelter. "Like, move it!"
Posted by: Cori on August 7, 2003 10:29 AMgod, that's funny. does your little parasite have any names yet?
Posted by: terry on August 7, 2003 12:07 PMWe call it Ziggy (the Zygote), but that probably won't go on the birth certificate. Still trying to get a short list we can both live with. Any suggestions?
Posted by: Cori on August 7, 2003 05:20 PMi have always longed to name a child peabo.
Posted by: julie on August 7, 2003 06:08 PMhow about something classic, like melvin or maude?
Posted by: terry on August 7, 2003 09:18 PMout here on the left coast (at least in front of my nose) the jonahs outnumber the emilys...i've given up on hoping for no repeats in my kids' classrooms...but i think ralph's mom has fewer worries.
Posted by: steph on August 8, 2003 11:48 PMI don't know, Steph...I'm pretty sure that, except for her aunt, Georgie is pretty much guaranteed a pass in the repeated name department.
Posted by: terry on August 9, 2003 08:30 AMOn the way to my father-in-law's (surprise) 75th birthday party -- a whole other topic, believe me -- Josh and I came up with a fake name for the parasite in case any of the relatives got annoying: Schmendrick Eckert-Chu has a lovely ring to it, don't you think?
Posted by: Cori on August 12, 2003 04:42 PMfabulous! and good for either gender.
Posted by: terry on August 12, 2003 07:24 PMI just ran across the web page of an old boyfriend whose wife is, as it seems, pregnant. They refer to the baby as 'the bagel'.
