Wei Jingsheng, China's most famous political prisoner, has been detained without charges since April 1, 1994.
After serving 14 1/2 years in prison for his participation in the Democracy Wall movement of 1979-1980, Wei was released in September of 1993. He was re-arrested on April 1, 1994, and has been held incommunicado for more than a year. Amnesty International considers Wei to be a prisoner of conscience, detained solely for the non-violent expression of his beliefs.
