It is well-known that the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to individuals or organizations for their distinguished service to world peace. Since real peace can only be achieved with the establishment of human rights and democracy, this sublime honour is often given to prominent individuals or organizations who fight for human rights and democracy in their own country.
Wei Jingsheng is the most distinguished forerunner of the movement for human rights and democracy in China today. As early as the late 1970s, he founded the magazine exploration to advocate ideas of human rights and democracy. In addition, to the four modernizations (industry, agriculture, science, and technology, and national defence) planned by the government, Wei asked for "the fifth modernization," that is, the modernization of human rights and democracy, and maintained that this was the prerequisite for the modernization of China. He opposes violence and dictatorship and advocates peace and reason. Wei Jingsheng's profound thought and discernment, his moral courage and fighting spirit, especially his pacifist ideals, has greatly influenced the development of the movement of human rights and democracy in China. The democracy movment in Beijing in spring of 1989 was in fact an extension of Wei Jingsheng's ideals.
Wei Jingsheng's advocacy for human rights and democracy in China offended the dictators and he was imprisoned for 15 years. Although he was released in 1993, thanks to the international opinion, he has been arrested again because he insists on continuing his fight for democracy and human rights in China. Wei Jingsheng's unyielding spirit, his distinguished service to human rights and democracy, prove that he fully deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. At the same time, this will not only be an honour for him, but also a great inspiration for all Chinese fighting for human rights and democracy in China.
