SUBMISSIONS WELCOME: BMT is happy to accept submissions by authors outside of our editorial collective; in fact, we depend on it. While BMT does not adhere to any one political line or "ism," we do share a general perspective on the world, one which we take into account when deciding what articles to accept for publication. (For instance, we have a standing policy against articles that we feel perpetuate racism, sexism, classism or homophobia.) We recommend that you read through an issue of BMT first to determine whether your proposed article would fit into our format.
BMT does not print fiction or poetry.

PAYMENT: There is none. BMT is an all-volunteer project, and in fact often costs its editors money. If ever we start to earn a profit, we can consider giving our writers a small fee, but until then, we can only offer a venue for your work.
For each story we publish of yours (no matter what length) we will also give you a complimentary one-year subscription to BMT, as well as extra copies of the issue in which your article appeared, if you would like. There also may be such perks as discounted (or free) t-shirts, mugs, or other merchandise.
And, of course, our undying gratitude.

TOPICS: BMT is not journalism as usual. Conventional "objectivity" is not a necessity (though distorting the facts to make a point is, obviously, a no-no), and we encourage authors to write about topics they have a personal stake in. The best journalism, we feel, combines ample helpings of news and analysis--something interesting to report on, and something interesting to say about it.
While Brooklyn is our home base and our focus, we are not so parochial as to think that our readers don't care about the world beyond the borough. A Brooklyn angle to a story is ideal, but articles dealing with New York City in general, or even non-NYC issues that could be of interest to Brooklynites, are fine as well.

BMT is divided into several sections, and each has its own criteria for length and subject matter:

DEADLINES: Shorts, features, and culture pieces for Spring issues are due January 15th; for Summer issues, April 15th; for Fall issues, July15th; and for Winter issues, October 15th. If absolutely necessary and if space permits, we will accept articles a week (or occasionally two) after deadline. However, articles received after deadline will not be returned to the authors if rewrites are necessary; instead, any required rewriting will be done by the editors, and shown to the author for approval.

RIGHTS AND OWNERSHIP: All articles (and photos and illustrations, for that matter) in BMT are copyrighted to their authors; you retain all publication rights, and can do with your article as you please once we've published it (or before we've published it, for that matter). We do ask that you allow us to place your article in our back issue archives on the internet (at gopher://gopher.echonyc.com), where they will eventually be indexed by the major search engines' robots; we will make sure to indicate that anyone looking to reprint or reuse your article in any way must get your permission.
Once we accept an article for publication, BMT's policy is to show all editorial changes (save for final proofreading changes) to the author for approval. If you disapprove of the changes, you can demand that we correct them, or withdraw your approval for us to publish it. We also reserve the right to refuse to publish your article unless we are allowed to make certain changes; however, under no circumstances will we run an article in a form of which its author disapproves. Your byline is going on it, and ultimately, you are the one who needs to be satisfied with how it reads.
