ECHO, New York City's oldest and best-established online service, and its Art Conference are proud to present its first exhibit at the "Echo Galleries", featuring the paintings of Bill Gibbons (aka Wastrel).
Bill Gibbons is a painter who says of his work: "I love to play with the figure, to see it emerge from a field of marks or watch as blobs of paint resolve themselves into the inevitable image of a face. I'm looking for that borderline where the marks exist simultaneously as paint and image, a border where sign and object fuse so that the image takes on the force of an actual object. When you see a face or figure in one of my paintings you've gotten the whole point of it." Gibbons holds a BA from Brown University, a BFA from the School of Visual Arts and an MFA from the New York Academy of Art. HIs work has been exhibited nationally and is included in many collections. He is the proprietor of Bill Gibbons Studio, a mural house whose clients include many New York designers and architects.
The ART Conference is about art, and other forms of self-conscious, aleatory, intentional, rarefied, or mass cultural production. It's for artists, critics, professionals, amateurs, voyeurs, and people who think they don't know anything about it. Sample discussions include: "Your Own Movement, Your Own Manifesto"; "Technology, New Media & The Arts"; "ARTISTS: What are you working on right now?"; and "Why don't I go to galleries anymore?"
It is hosted by Matthew Ehrlich and M.R. Petit. Ehrlich (aka oedipa) works for MTV Networks and is a candidate for a PhD in Art History, Theory and Criticism at MIT. Many talented developing artists honed their drawing skills with their depictions of his naked bum. Petit (aka merpy) is a multi-media artist and educator who teaches at the Interactive Telecommunications Program at NYU and works with the Fund for the City of New York. She is currently abandoning art to pursue her accordion studies.
